AI is reshaping global power demand, and data centers now occupy a central role in the energy transition. As AI workloads scale and high-density compute becomes the norm, data-center operators face growing pressure on power supply, grid capacity, and sustainability targets. The next competitive frontier, however, is not only about securing more megawatts, but it’s also about using energy far more intelligently.A recent deployment by NTT Global Data Centers clearly demonstrates what this shift looks like in practice. clearly shows what this shift looks like in practice.
From Static Cooling to Intelligent Optimization
At its Rhine-Ruhr 1 facility in Bonn, Germany, NTT Global Data Centers moved beyond traditional static cooling controls and implemented an AI-driven cooling optimization system using the etaONE platform developed by etalytics. The outcome was significant: nearly a 20% reduction in cooling-related energy consumption.Cooling represents a large share of non-IT energy use in modern data centers. Rather than relying on fixed setpoints or conservative margins, the AI system continuously optimizes chillers, pumps, and heat-exchange systems in real time.By leveraging a digital twin of the cooling circuit, alongside historical and live operational data, the platform dynamically adapts to changing workloads, ambient conditions, and fluid behavior- ensuring energy is used only when required and always at peak efficiency.

Why This Matters Right Now
As AI-driven data centers surge across Europe and beyond, efficiency-led energy strategies are no longer optional - they are becoming mission-critical levers for:🔹 Unlocking 24×7 baseload power access at speed🔹 Reducing interconnection delays and easing grid congestion🔹 Keeping PUE and OPEX under control as AI heat loads rise🔹 Turning large electrical loads into grid-supportive and revenue-generating assets🔹 Hedging against price volatility and congestion through AI-driven market intelligenceThe next competitive advantage won’t come from securing more megawatts - it will come from using energy more intelligently, across cooling, power procurement, flexibility markets, and storage-enabled resilience.
Why Liquid Cooling + AI Is a Powerful Combination

According to Dr. Thomas Weber, Co-Founder and CSO at etalytics, liquid cooling already offers inherent efficiency advantages, but optimization software amplifies those savings even further.“Liquid cooling systems already consume less energy by design. Optimization software amplifies the savings even more, because its physical models are uniquely suited to fluid-driven environments.”
This combination of physics-based modeling and AI control enables deeper, more reliable efficiency gains especially as thermal loads and compute densities continue to increase.
Dr. Thomas Weber adds: Compute density rises. “We’re excited to continue this journey and make our data centers around the world as energy efficient as possible.”
What This Means for Data-Center Power Infrastructure
The NTT case highlights what becomes possible when predictive intelligence and sustainability objectives are embedded directly into infrastructure operations:🔹Lower power demand & OPEX ~20% lower cooling energy directly reduces electricity consumption and operating costs.🔹Smoother load profiles. Real-time optimization flattens peaks, easing strain on grids and interconnectors.🔹Improved sustainability performance, reduced energy use, supports decarbonization, especially when paired with renewables or waste-heat recovery.🔹Scalability aligned with AI growth. Efficiency-first design prevents rising PUEs and uncontrolled energy demand. This is not just about efficiency, it’s about building energy-responsive, grid-friendly data centers.
Beyond Cooling: Toward Net-Zero Digital Infrastructure
This breakthrough reinforces NTT’s long-term sustainability strategy, supporting its commitment to net-zero emissions across all data centers by 2030, and across its total value chain by 2040.Beyond efficiency gains and OPEX reduction, the project enables smoother power load profiles and reduced grid stress proving that AI can convert data centers from passive power consumers into active participants in the energy system.
Join the Conversation in Berlin
To explore these themes in depth, from AI-driven optimization and liquid cooling to grid interaction and power availabilityDr. Thomas Weber will be speaking at Power Supply for Data Centers 2026, sharing insights on🔹 Impact of congestion pricing and zonal challenges on investments

Energy, Time, and AI: The New Equation Powering the Data Center Revolution

For decades, the energy industry has followed two guiding principles:1. It’s capital-intensive, requiring vast investments to build, operate, and maintain infrastructure.2. It runs on long timelines, with projects often spanning 30 to 50 years. While the first principle remains, the second has been dramatically disrupted. Today, time has become the most valuable - and scarce - resource in the global energy landscape. This shift is largely driven by the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is not only transforming industries and accelerating innovation, but also consuming unprecedented amounts of energy.
As The Wall Street Journal highlights, data centers - “famously hungry for more power” - are now taking control of their energy futures, building their own power plants to secure a reliable supply. With demand soaring, speed has become a matter of survival.
From grids and turbines to transformers and cables, every part of the energy supply chain is in high demand, with lead times stretching up to two or three years. Major players like GE Vernova, Schneider Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Nexans, and Hitachi Energy are facing overwhelming backlogs. This is no longer simply about demand - it’s about urgency. In the race to lead the AI revolution, waiting is no longer an option.
🧠 The AI-Energy Nexus: A Race Against Time

The rise of AI represents a major turning point for the energy sector. As data centers grow to support massive AI workloads, energy reliability, flexibility, and sustainability are no longer separate challenges - they are deeply interconnected.

Prisma Photonics – Measuring Wind Across Every Span for Safer and More Accurate DLR

The safe capacity of a transmission line depends on the wind that cools it. That wind isn’t uniform. It changes along the line — shaped by terrain, vegetation, valleys, and ridges. For years, operators have relied on static ratings and generalized weather models to estimate these conditions. While valuable, these models don’t capture the true variations along the actual line route. And in the world of Dynamic Line Rating (DLR), missing that local detail means either leaving capacity unused or pushing the grid closer to risk.
🎯 Join us at the "European Geothermal Energy 2025: Exploration, Drilling & Reservoir Management

At Prisma Photonics, we take a different approach.
1. Measuring the Wind Where It Matters
Using the optical fiber already installed on your lines, as the Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) or other technology, Prisma Photonics turns the fiber itself into a sensing platform. Our technology measures wind directly from the wire — continuously, across the full length of the line. This isn’t just about detecting gusts or averages. We capture how land cover, a stand of trees, a deep valley, a ridge exposed to prevailing winds, changes the cooling conditions. Those measurements feed directly into our DLR calculations, giving you one rating for the whole line that’s grounded in the real conditions the line experiences. The result: safer, more accurate capacity ratings that reflect the actual state of the asset, not an approximation.
2. Why It Matters for Grid Operators
➡️ Safety First – Real-world wind data means our DLR recommendations are tied to the actual cooling performance of the conductor, reducing uncertainty and keeping safety margins where they belong.➡️ Maximizing Capacity – By capturing the true operating environment, we help unlock hidden capacity — without the risk of overestimation.➡️ Continuous Visibility – Our system operates 24/7, providing an always current picture of the line’s conditions and capacity.➡️ No Additional Hardware – We leverage the optical fiber that’s already there; no towers to climb, no sensors to install, no permits to request.
3. Proven in Real-World Operations
Our approach is already deployed across thousands of kilometers of transmission lines worldwide. In an era when demand is rising from data centers, electrification, and industrial growth, knowing the true capacity of every line is no longer optional — it’s essential.

Struggling to meet growing energy demands?
PrismaCapacity is your answer to unlocking hidden grid potential. This solution boosts grid capacity through Advanced Line Ratings (DLR, AAR) by providing real-time wind data across every span of your transmission lines, eliminating the need for traditional sensors. By leveraging the optical fiber on your OPGW, PrismaCapacity delivers highly detailed wind metrics, empowering you to optimize existing infrastructure and comply with critical regulations like U.S. FERC Order 881. Enhance grid reliability and defer costly new line constructions with intelligent, data-driven decisions.

Advancing Geothermal Drilling
Developed after over a decade of research at MIT, Quaise’s system uses a powerful gyrotron to generate millimeter waves that ablate rock without physical contact.Unlike conventional drill bits that falter in hard, high-temperature formations such as granite or basalt, this technology can penetrate rock layers typically found near superhot zones—reaching temperatures around 400°C (752°F).This innovation unlocks the potential to access geothermal reservoirs deep beneath the Earth’s crust, where energy density is exponentially higher. Grid-scale geothermal projects capable of producing output comparable to major fossil fuel plants—without emissions. Before this breakthrough, millimeter wave drilling had only been proven in laboratories, achieving depths of just a few centimeters. The 100-meter field success demonstrates real-world viability, with granite drilled during the test being representative of the Earth’s basement layer—critical for scaling geothermal worldwide.
“The Earth holds an enormous reservoir of clean energy — energy that could fundamentally change how we power our world if we can reach it,” said Carlos Araque, CEO of Quaise Energy. “Quaise has now demonstrated that millimeter wave technology can do what no other technology can do: drill perfectly clean holes through some of the hardest rocks on Earth in record time. This milestone brings us closer to making geothermal energy a practical solution to power communities virtually anywhere.”
Next Steps Toward Commercialization
Building on this success, Quaise plans to deploy a 10x more powerful gyrotron and aims to complete its first pilot power plant in the Western U.S. by 2028. The company’s vision is bold: to make superhot geothermal a zero-carbon backbone of the modern energy system.
